当年轻的公司女白领YQ懊恼地抱怨自己做了一下午的工作文档由于操作失误而消失的无影无踪之际，她的同学Robin为她建议了一种新的选择：Google Doc。
这个建议受到MSN群内很多同学的赞许，因为很多人已经在用Google Doc在线写作工作文档了。随即，一个新的词汇“Cloud computing”出现在大家的讨论中。她感觉自己的工作和生活开始被一种新的力量触动了。
一年半之前，颇为极客的Robin自加入他任职的这家公司之时起，就在把Google Doc带入日常工作，他推荐CEO用Google Doc（电子文档）阅读、批改自己的工作文档，他建议COO和同事们用Google spreadsheets（电子表格）建立并分享彼此的工作周报和工作进度表，在做完PPT演示文稿的时候，他习惯性地要上传到Google Presently上面。同时他会用Google Translate处理自己的翻译问题，用Google Picasa处理并储存自己的照片，用Google Calendar管理自己的日程，去跟同学们“腐败”之前他会用Google Map查询行车路线，甚至他青睐的输入法也是Google的拼音输入法。原来这些由微软提供的软件承担的工作，他现在几乎全部用Google来完成，不需要安装维护什么东西，既不占用个人电脑的资源，还带来了更大的自由和便捷，他喜欢这种感觉。他把这种快乐归功于“云计算”（Cloud computing）。
Robin只是众多“云计算”（Cloud computing）的受益者之一，电子设备制造商Sanmina-SCI更为清晰地感受了这种“云计算”（Cloud computing）带来的影响。半年前， Sanmina-SCI只有很少员工使用Google的云计算服务“Google Apps”，而现在这家年收入107亿美元的公司内使用Google Apps的员工已经超过1000人。他们使用Google的电子邮件、文档编辑及日程表等在线程序来处理自己的工作问题。该公司首席信息官Manesh Patel表示：“我们的项目组位于全球各地，使用Google Apps能帮助他们有效的合作。”他预计，该公司未来三年Google Apps的用户数将增加至10000人，占员工总数的25%。
但是在Google Apps的项目负责人、Google企业部门总经理戴夫-格罗伍德(Dave Girouard)看来，这只是一个开始，随着通用电气（GE）、宝洁（P&G）、欧莱雅（L’Oréal）等大公司的加入，会有越来越多的公司和个人使用Google Apps，而这将彻底改写历史。如同哈佛商学院的教授大卫所说“如果Google获得成功，微软目前提供的许多价值都将化为乌有。”
然而与此同时微软也在变革，作为其Live战略的一部分，微软的Live Mesh目前正处于测试阶段，已推出多个Beta版，今年底前即会面市。在微软构思中，Live Mesh就是“互联网上的Windows”，以前在个人计算机上实现的Windows功能，用户可以互联网网上全部实现。通过Live Mesh，用户在某一设备上的日程、短消息、密码、文件、E-mail等各种数据，可以上传到“云”里，并与其他设备实现同步、管理和设置，而这些设备包括PC、手机、电视、Xbox、数字相框等。在Live战略下，微软CEO斯蒂夫.巴尔默想把微软改造成为一个基于互联网的软件作为服务的公司。而Live Mesh就是微软的“云计算”平台。
实际上，一个新的计算时代已经不知不觉中拉开了序幕，我们使用计算机和互联网的方式正在悄悄地发生变革，一朵美丽的“云”，一种全新的计算模式已经悬浮在我们的上空。
