Rehr opened NAB 2006 with call for broadcasters to take the offensive and embrace change. "Our future hinges on our ability to exploit every new technology on every new platform," he said. "Content is still king, but distribution is key. Broadcasters must move quickly to increase the number of distribution channels for our content."New NAB President and CEO David Rehr takes the stage. "NAB must move from an organization that is perceived as being on defense as one that is one offense.... We must embrace change.... My sense is that broadcasting has been defensive in its thinking for too long. Confidence... should set the tone as we move forward." Here's the part when he disses cable TV and satellite radio. Broadcast has the top 255 shows. Etc. "Digital TV and digital radio is about to reinvent our industry." "This is the day of consumer convenience and consumer choice. For the first time in the history of media, the consumer is in charge... Getting a new model for the future is easier said than done... Change is hard." "The future is always on offence, and those who play defense are left behind. Five areas:" 1. "Our future hinges on our ability to exploit every new technology on every new platform. Content is still king, but distribution is key. Broadcasters must move quickly to increase the number of distribution channels for our content. Our future is a broadcast signal on every platform. TV and radio were wireless before it was cool." "Every new stream of programming is a potential new source of revenue. Yes, the copyright problems will be worked out.... What is most immediate an important is our full embrace of this future." He's pushing must-carry. And he advocates "must-share" to ensure network affiliate relationships with sharing of new revenue streams from new platforms. Every new device should have the ability to pick up local radio signals (digital radio.) 2. "We must promote the benefits of digital television and digital radio." Must start before the DTV conversion. "February 2009 is staring us in the face.... The American people need to be educated... It's our responsibility... They can't absorb this through osmosis. One of the most pristine signals they can receive is over the air. We can't leave that job... to Congress or our competitors or the guy who sells televisions at Best Buy." NAB will be announcing a comprehensive program to educate consumers about HDTV. "Radio is on the verge of its greatest transformation in history... with digital radio." 3. "We must promote greater competition between cable, satellite and telecom." NAB believes telephone companies should be able to fairly compete with cable. To be a better player, they have to have local content. That is us." Compensation for broadcasters' content on new platforms "cannot be ignored." Talking about retrans consent. Vote in Congress coming up on April 26th. Urging everyone to contact their local reps and urge them to vote no on Representative Deal's ammendement to "undercut the current retransmission consent system." 4. "Rather than being on defense about indeceny, NAB is taking a leading role to help parents to control what comes into their homes." Unprecedented ad campaign to "reach everyone home in America." TV ratings systems. "We need to reframe the debate from the ... occasional slip-up... instead we will explain to parents they have the total power right now to control all TV programs in their homes." 5. "We are moving away from using the word lobbyist... instead we're adopting the word advocacy." Only change of wording, yes, but reflects a larger change of attitude. Offense, not defense. "We intead to step up our grassroots advocacy.... We must have more pro-broadcaster members of Congress, in fact, we must elect more broadcasters to Congress."]]>
