1.
Generally, what information would you like
to publish on your blog but not in the press
room?
The
audiences of the European Commission press
room and of my blog are very different:
press professionals in one case and European
citizens in the other. Obviously they have
different needs when speaking of
information. I decided to have my blog to
reach people more easily and more directly,
to be able to dialogue with them. That’s why
I treat of very wide ranges of subjects to
make them react, to give my opinion on
subjects outside my European portfolio and
to give them a more precise idea of who I
am. The subjects I’m talking about vary from
debriefing of my political activities and
explanations of my political choices,
because I owe them to the European citizens;
to reactions about what’s going on in the
world, comments on my personal life, and
“the corner of the reader”: I like to give
my opinion on books I’ve recently read, and
so do some regular commentators of my blog!
Documents published in the press room, such
as speeches press releases; communications
etc are also available on my website.
2. You
got audience from the blog but it takes
time. Do you think it is worth writing a
blog? If yes, could you explain why other
leaders never try this new media?
If I
thought writing a blog was not worthy, I
would have already stopped! Actually I must
say I’m very glad I started. It does take
time to write entries regularly and to
analyse and answer the comments, however we
have positive feedback from commentators and
it is a new form of political communication
giving more weight to dialogue. As you know
dialogue is at the centre of the new
approach of communication of the European
Commission, and I think it is a good way to
exercise and develop it. I also hope that
using this modern media will give the
opportunity to young people to get
interested in what is going on in Brussels.
As far
as other political leaders are concerned, I
cannot speak for them! However despite the
fact that it is a real and long-lasting
commitment and that some of us can be
reluctant to use new technologies, I know
that the initiative is spreading, mostly at
the national level. And some of my fellow
commissioners are very interested in my
adventure!
3.
Facing many comments every day, which
principles do you chose to handle the
questions?
Regarding comments and questions I must say
that I rely on the moderator of my website
who’s doing precious job. He is dealing with
lot of questions and demands of information
on his own; mainly to be sure people get
answers quickly. When I’m myself dealing
with questions and comments I give my
personal advice, not a ready-to-use
political answer. The most important thing
is clarity and openness. Here again dialogue
is at the centre of my approach.
4.
Could you give some advice to Chinese
politicians who are to open blogs?
Basically two main points:
- Be
aware that it takes time and that you cannot
drop it as it is a form of involvement
towards the citizens.
- Give
priority to constructive dialogue.
and
one last thing: enjoy!
