Universal Music Unveils Branded Phone, Mobile Service

Adding to aggressive mobile music plans from carriers Verizon, Sprint
Nextel, and Cingular, Universal Music has also recently tossed its hat
in the ring. The leading label will soon deliver a branded, MVNO mobile
experience called MoveU Mobile, complete with phones and service. The
plan involves Single Touch Interactive, a customized mobile provider,
and Sprint Nextel, which will contract its network to Universal. The
result will be a series of branded phones and customized music
offerings, including ringtones, wallpapers, full-track downloads, and
other goodies. Phones are expected to hit the market by the end of the
year, with artist-specific phones also part of the mix.

MoveU Mobile phones are expected to hit the market by the end of the
year, with price points beginning at $99. Artist-specific phones also
part of the mix, creating a new promotional vehicle for Universal
Music. Ringtones will likely be priced between $1.99 and $2.49, and a
monthly all-you-can eat plan is also under consideration. The move
follows a major investment from Universal Music in Amp’d Mobile, a Los
Angeles-based wireless entertainment company. That partnership will
also give Universal artists top billing as part of a launch later this
year.
