Mobile consumers are more interested in music than games, according to a recent research finding from In-Stat. Specifically, 34 percent of respondents in a recent survey indicated some level of interest in wireless music downloads or mobile-based radio. But major hurdles could hamper overall profit potential according to the group, including pricing, revenue sharing and DRM concerns. Per the In-Stat report, "widespread uptake of music applications may be on hold" in the absence of inexpensive and simple access to mobile music downloads.
In-Stat also took a close look at the most dedicated mobile music users, a group it dubbed the "MP3 Intenders". That distinct demographic tends to be male, younger, and subscribers to either T-Mobile or Sprint Nextel. That would explain the aggressive timetable that Sprint has established on its over-the-air mobile music service, which is slated to be live by the holidays. On the hardware end, the group discovered that music-interested consumers are more willing to purchase more expensive phones, and are also likely to replace them more often. One-fourth of respondents to the In-Stat survey had paid more than $150 for their current handset.
